Running While Pregnant – 24 weeks

I meant to do an update last week but I was in El Paso all week for work. It was hotter than hades there in the afternoons and after walking and inspecting buildings all day I had very little energy to get a run in. I took some solace in knowing I was walking at least 2 to 3 miles during the building inspections each day. That’s something, right? I also forced myself to get in a short 3 mile jog one day in the hotel.

El Paso 2

I am happy to say I was able to consume mass quantities of delicious Mexican food while I was there. The Mexican food here in New Orleans is good, but it’s just not the same as the Mexican food in west Texas. I think it’s the green and red chiles they use. SOOOO yummy.

So we hit 24 weeks this weekend. Eep! Here’s an update.

How I’m feeling:

To be completely honest I’ve been struggling these last couple of weeks. Stomach issues are still plaguing me. I eat and then a little while later I’m miserably full. I really have to make a concentrated effort to eat SMALL portions. That’s difficult for me. I love to eat. I’m not the best at portion control (one of the many reasons I run!). Our hotel was REALLY bad last week and I didn’t get a whole lot of sleep either. I probably averaged 5 hours a night. So that equated to no energy as well. Now I’ve been sleeping like a baby since I got home and I’ve felt much, much better.

Weight gain:

Between 9 and 10 pounds depending on what day I step on the scale (and how much Mexican food I consumed the night before).

Watermelon, watermelon, watermelon with a little cantaloupe thrown in for good measure. Also chips and salsa and guacamole. Can’t get enough.

It’s getting more and more difficult. I’ve completely thrown pace and mileage out the window at this point. With the warm weather, extra weight and baby belly pulling on my back I just run (jog/shuffle/schlog) as long as I can and take walk breaks until I recover. I try and get 3 miles in a few times a week and do some cross training at the gym with weights and the elliptical. I still don’t quite need a support band but my FlipBelt is almost acting like one! It provides enough support around my hips and lower belly right now to actually be comforting. Dual use! If you haven’t checked them out, I recommend one. I love my FlipBelt and have used it for several half marathons as well as daily runs. They’re wonderful for holding all your stuff in one place without it flopping all around.

Father’s Day Runner’s Gift Guide

FD Gift GuideFather’s Day is next Sunday, June 15th! Scratching your head on what to get your Dad, husband, fur-baby-daddy? If he’s a runner, here’s a fun round up a few runner gift ideas with some excellent discount codes and specials.

1. A running hat from Headsweats. These are my ultimate favorite running hats. They are super lightweight, breathable and have a thin terrycloth sweatband on the inside. This is especially useful during the hot, super sweaty summer months. They have a cute Father’s Day line right now or I personally love the collegiate line. Get him a hat with his favorite college team’s logo on the front (Gig ’em Aggies!!). Right now get 25% off your purchase with the code DAD14.

2. A Road ID bracelet with a cool #1 Dad Badge from Road ID. I will not go out for a run or walk without my Road ID. I always feel so much more comfortable knowing that (heaven forbid) if I get injured or pass out, emergency personnel will know who to contact. I got Mr. Z one for Christmas too and he wears his 24/7 since it displays his penicillin allergy. I want to get him the #1 Dad badge to put on it too! Right now get 10% off your purchase with the code DGUYW2RGX8FS.

3. Thorlos Experia socks from Thorlos. These are my go-to socks for running. I turned my husband onto them and I swear he can never have enough. They are sweat wicking with thin uppers and a moderate amount of padding on the sole of the foot. I wear these daily and they are so comfortable. Right now buy 3 get 1 free on their website.

4. A race entry into a local or virtual Father’s Day race. We have a couple of local 5k races going on around here on Father’s Day weekend. You could sign your guy up for a surprise local race or Will Run For Bling has a cute Father’s Day virtual race going on benefitting the Arthritis Foundation. Sign up, choose and run your distance of 5k, 10k, or half marathon and they will send you the cute race medal shown above!

5. A #1 Runner Dad mug or glass from Gone for a Run. Now really, Gone for a Run has SO MANY cute Father’s Day gift ideas that it’s hard to narrow them down. They have cute runner dad coffee mugs, beer mugs, t-shirts, picture frames, medal holders…etc., etc. I also like their Run Your State tees. Really cute. Just do a search for “Dad” at the top of their site and all of the cute Father’s Day stuff pops up. Right now get 10% off your order when you sign up for their newsletter (scroll to the bottom of the page).

6. An athletic bag from Apera Bags. I love, love, LOVE my Active Pack from Apera. My husband has been eyeballing it enviously. He is in desperate need of a new gym bag, so guess who’s getting a brand new duffle!!? 🙂 I cannot brag enough about these bags. They are so well thought out for the athlete and traveler. The bags have tons of useful pockets and are very roomy without being bulky or heavy. Right now Apera is running two specials: All blue bags are 40% off or receive 20% off your order of any other items with the code SUMMER2014.

These are just a few, quick suggestions for some fun running and workout gear for your guy. Hope this gives you some good ideas. Have a great day and keep on moving!

It’s National Running Day Y’all!!

I love National Running Day! I love all the running posts and encouragements that stream across social media on National Running Day. It always gives me a kick in the butt to get out the door and get running. I love broadcasting why I love to run! I love all the fun things going on locally and nationally today. For instance, you can get your own customized “I Run” badge here.

As if you needed more encouragement to go run (it REALLY is good for you!), here’s a cool infographic outlining some of the great benefits of running.

I managed to get out in the heat for a lunchtime “runch” today ( I HAD to!). Those 5 miles felt so great. I really needed it. I enjoyed every sweaty, sweaty, SWEATY step of it. It’s getting hot out there. It was 89* when I finished up. Whew! Thank goodness for the shady trail.

Another cool thing happening today for National Running Day is all the great race discounts. Here are just a few from some of my favorite local races and national races. With these great race discounts plus early entry fees, how can you NOT sign up for one (or four)? If you have a favorite race or are thinking about signing up for one, check out their Facebook page today. They likely have a discount going right now.

Hope you’re having a great day and hope this encourages you to get out there and run, run, run! Any distance, any speed works. All that you need is a positive attitude and let the miles do the rest.

Happy Running Day Everyone!

Monday Motivation – Inspire Yourself!

I saw this the other day and I really liked it. I like it because it reminds me of all the people that inspire me weekly. But it also reminds me of a very important lesson: I need to inspire myself. I’ve been in a slump lately. I’ve been having a lot of stomach issues (pregnancy related) and I’m having to relearn how to eat. It’s been frustrating and I just have not felt like doing anything related to exercising. That then leads to a self-defeating attitude that I’m not out there doing something. I’m eating smaller meals and starting to figure out what works and what doesn’t (THANK YOU Tums!). So this week I’m determined to get back out there and get moving. My goal this week is to inspire myself. I want to look back at this meme on Friday and say, “Yeah, I kicked some ass this week. I inspired ME!”

So get out there and be an inspiration to yourself! Make it a great week!
