Race Review – Keeping Up With Jones 5k & Fun Run

The weekend before last we trekked out as a family and ran our first 5k race with the new addition Baby Z-peat. We ran the Keeping Up With Jones 5k and Fun Run put on by Jones Physical Therapy. I’ve always wanted to run this race but something has kept me from doing it each year. I’d heard it was a lot of fun with tons of great door prizes. The weather has been gorgeous here lately so I decided to sign us up online to get our butts out the door and get moving.

wpid-20141018_082641.jpgI signed Little Z up for his first one mile fun run. He loves to run around the house and he runs down to the pond and playground by our house to play and feed ducks. I thought this would be a fun introduction to racing for him.

We barely arrived in time on Saturday morning to get Little Z up to the starting line for the one mile run (it’s tough wrangling everyone). Mr. Z was running it with him to assist and carry him if need be. He was a little overwhelmed by the people and excitement and poor Mr. Z ended up carrying him for most of the mile. But he put him down toward the finish and told him to RUN! And he did! It was so stinking adorable watching the two of them run in together.

20141018_081938Immediately following was the 5k. We loaded Little Z into The Beast and got ready to roll. Smoothie King was there so he was super content to chill in the stroller with his strawberry smoothie.

We walked to the start and got at the back of the pack. I had no illusions of grandeur about running this whole thing. I just wanted to run some/walk some and have fun. The course was through old town and along the lakefront. We could not have asked for a prettier day.

wpid-20141018_082716.jpgI actually  managed to run the entire first mile! I was so proud of myself. We ran/walked the last two since I was getting a little winded and tired. I didn’t want to overdo it. We finished the race and headed to the finish area. There was a ton of great food. Another Broken Egg Cafe catered the race. There were Southern biscuits, bacon, scrambled eggs, Smoothie King smootihes, Starbucks coffee, and Starbucks pastries and bagels. Several of the local half marathon races were out promoting their races with discounts too!

wpid-20141018_092809.jpgWe met up with some of our friends after the race (my friend Claudia and me here). It was so great to see Amanda and Fred (NOLArunner) there too! Always a pleasure physically chatting with some of my social running network friends. Sorry I didn’t get a picture with Amanda though. Speedy Fred won his age division! Congrats Fred!

wpid-20141018_095136.jpgThey were calling out all the age division wins and they got to the “5 and under” division. They called the name of the fastest girl and then they were calling the winner for the fastest boy. It was Little Z!!! He won his age division in his first race! (now he was the only entrant, but that’s besides the point). He was SOOOO excited to get his prize. He kept asking all morning, “I was the winner Mama?” He won a very cool coffee mug with a packet of hot cocoa. He loves his winner mug.

20141018_094726After the age division awards and overall winner awards they started with the door prizes. There were a BUNCH of really cool door prizes! My friend Claudia won a $175 spa package! Mr. Z won a $20 gift certificate to Varsity Sports. There was local artwork, jewelry, gift baskets from local merchants and even a grill (as the grand door prize). It was really fun watching the prizes being handed out.

All in all it was a GREAT race day. We had a blast and I will definitely be back to run it again next year.

Keeping Up With Jones 5k

Pros:

  • Small, local race – not crowded at all
  • Fun, scenic course along the lakefront
  • GREAT food and coffee after
  • HUGE amount of really good door prizes
  • Really good race t-shirt. It’s super soft and cute. Sorry – no pic.
  • Very family fun oriented

Cons:

  • I can’t think of one!

Monday Motivation – DietBet

Baby weight be gone!! That’s my motto. I’ve been doing pretty well and trying to patiently work this baby weight off, but I also have not really held myself accountable much. I will make lots and lots of excuses and the Halloween candy has been the death of me.

So, as a little extra incentive I decided to join my friend Mindy’s (Road Runner Girl) dietbet! I’ve always heard about dietbet via the Twitters but never really looked into it much. My diet mantra has always been, run your ass off, count calories, hit the gym some too. It’s worked in the past, but right now I need a little extra boost. With the late nights, sleep deprivation and added stress of balancing a toddler I’m really reaching for the junk food right now.

dietbet

Here’s how dietbet works: You find a game you want to join and pay the entry fee (usually $25) which goes into a big pot. You commit to losing either 4% of your body weight in 4 weeks or 10% in 6 months – all VERY attainable with a little work. You weigh in at the beginning and the end and those people in the game who reached their goal get to split the pot. Easy peasy! I like that there is money involved. It’s a little extra boost to keep that cookie out of my mouth. Plus I also like that it’s very social. You can leave posts to your games, pictures, updates, and also cheer each other on. It appeals to the social media nerd in me. This dietbet game JUST started so you can still join if you like. Just click on the link here:

I’m excited about it and I even talked Mr. Z into joining me. We’re doing it together which will make it a whole lot easier since we tend to support and push each other well.

Monday Motivation – Official CCC10k Blogger!

I am so stinking excited you guys! I have been selected as one of the official Crescent City Connection 10k bloggers this year! The CCC10k is a huge race here in New Orleans that always falls on Easter weekend. Thousands of people of all abilities come out for this race to run and walk it and celebrate at the huge after party.

ccc10k

This year’s race was actually my first time doing it. I usually had family commitments around Easter and couldn’t run it. We ran it as a family: a little one in the oven, another little one in the stroller, and a big one running beside me. We had such a blast! You can read about the 2014 race recap and watch the race video here.

This is such a huge honor to be included with a great group of bloggers and people I call running friends for this event. If you get a chance, go check out their blogs. They are phenomenal, inspiring people to know.

I chose this as my Monday Motivation because I want to be able to RUN this race in the spring. I had to mostly run/walk it last time because of uncomfortable hip and bladder issues due to my pregnancy. I want to be fit and back in full running mode by the time this race rolls around. I’m thinking of shooting for a 10k PR if my training goes well.

I was so motivated I got out the door this morning and ran a decent 2.75 miles. I actually ran, ran this time. I only had to take a couple of short walk breaks, and that was while pushing the single jogging stroller and being VERY sleep deprived (cranky, gassy baby last night). It’s a good start!

Monday Motivation – The Double Stroller BEAST

Awwwright. It is ON like Donkey Kong folks. I am now officially 4 weeks postpartum and this extra weight has got to come off. I put on a pair of jeans yesterday. Ooof. Can you say stuffing 10 lbs of crap in a 5 lb bag? I’m ready to get to work and drop these extra pounds.  Plus seeing everyone’s race pics and updates from Chicago this weekend has really given me the running itch! Congrats to all the Chicago runners!!!

My motivation this week is THIS BEAST! The BOB Ironman Duallie Stroller…whew!

Bob

I took it out for it’s first spin this week and man it is a WORK-OUT! I was just power walking with a few little run spurts here and there (when Little Z screams “I stepped on the gas peddle Momma! Go fast!”, I have to comply). I was drenched in sweat after just 2.2 miles.

dual bobI’m a little intimidated by it because of it’s sheer beast-ness but I’m also a bit excited about learning to run with it, control it and push it. I attribute running with Little Z in the single stroller these last couple of years to my increase in speed and big race PRs. So I know this double stroller is going to get me into some serious cardio shape. *puff, puff*

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right?? 🙂

Make it a great week!!

Friday Five Fave

Just a quick post between baby and toddler business for my Friday Five Favorites right now.

1. My Baby Connect app. Oh wow this app is such a lifesaver. I used it when Little Z was an infant and I’m using it again for Baby Z-peat. It keeps track of feedings, which boob he nursed on last, diaper changes, sleep, medical information (immunizations, weight, height, etc.) and so much more. And it puts out these nice bar graphs for you with all kinds of data. That appeals to the inner science nerd in me so much. I mainly just use it so I know when he fed and had a diaper change last. It’s much needed for when you are exhausted with mommy brain like I am right now. It’s available for Android and Apple devices and worth every penny!

2. All things FALL! I am so ready for cooler weather and pumpkin patches and boots and scarves and hot cocoa and… One of the local feed stores has the best pumpkin and fall mums around. We had so much fun exploring and picking out little pumpkins to take home. We’re going to go back soon for our big pumpkins and mums.

Fall

3. Our newborn photo session! I can’t share the photos right now but we got the proofs back and they are so gorgeous. I’m having such a hard time deciding which ones to purchase. I want them ALL!

4. College Football! Even though my poor Aggies haven’t looked too great the last few games I am a die-hard fan. I love watching all the games, especially the SEC match-ups. You never know how they’re going to turn out. There have been so many upsets already this season. The polls have been crazy! We play Ole Miss this weekend – EEP! GIG ‘EM AGGIES and beat the hell outta Ole Miss!

5. THIS sweetness! Little Z is really warming up to his baby brother and he asks now to hold him every night. It just melts my heart!
