SiS Energy Gels Are Tummy Pleasers

Fueling on the long run is always hit or miss with me. I have stomach issues with anything too sugary. I can’t stand the tongue-coating stickiness of a lot of gu/gels. I’ve done a lot of trial and error (sometimes BAD error) with different formulas to see what works. The Science in Sport Energy Gels really intrigued me. Their Isotonic Energy Gels are designed to digest quickly and easily – without the need for water to wash them down!


I received four different flavors to try out: Apple GO Isotonic Energy Gel, Salted Strawberry GO Energy + Electrolyte Gel, Lemon & Mint GO Energy + Electrolyte, and Double Espresso GO Energy + Caffeine gel.

Apple GO Isotonic Energy Gel

These had a nice, mild apple flavor. Not overly sweet. I would describe the consistency as a watery jello. I had no problems taking it without water. It went down easily and I had zero aftertaste or tongue coating. I didn’t feel the need to wash it down with extra water. This has 22 g of carbohydrates per gel. I took one before my long run and another midway (8 miler) and I had good energy and zero stomach distress.


Salted Strawberry GO Energy + Electrolyte Gel, Lemon & Mint GO Energy + Electrolyte

While I liked the apple flavor a lot, I REALLY like these two flavors. Something about the added salt mixed with the subtle sweetness of the strawberry and lemon & mint made these really refreshing. Out of everything these were my favorites and I’d totally buy these again. They have 22g of carbohydrates, like the regular GO Energy Gels, but they have added 300 mg of salt to help replace key electrolytes during sweaty, sweat sessions. Living in the South with high humidity we sweat A LOT. I sometimes take salt tabs on long runs to help with the salt loss through sweat. These helped sustain my long runs really well. The consistency is the same and I didn’t have any stomach distress at all.


Double Espresso GO Energy + Caffeine gel

The Double Espresso GO Energy + Caffeine gel was interesting. Each energy gel has 22g of carbohydrates like the other, but this one has an added 150mg of caffeine. That’s equivalent to about a cup and a half of coffee. It definitely got me going. These were double the caffeine. They also make a caffeine gel with 75mg of caffeine if you don’t want that much kick. I can see these being effective to take before the run and then switch to a normal or electrolyte gel during. Otherwise that would be way too much caffeine for me. The taste was ok. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t like as much as the others.


All in all, I really liked the Science in Sport Energy Gels a lot. They were definitely easy to digest and easy on the tongue. They sustained my long run without stomach issues and I didn’t get mouth fatigue from trying to get them down. I would purchase these again in a heartbeat.
