Streaking through April, Running into May

Another month has come and gone in 2016. I decided to #runstreak for the month of April. It’s something I’d been curious about for a while now and I have seen several other runners do it and make some really good strides. I had finished up my marathon and felt recovered enough to try it. I still can’t believe that I’ve made it through 30 days of running every single day! I’m working on writing a post on lessons learned and my experience starting this #runstreak.

Below are my stats for April (via my Garmin 910XT and Garmin Vivofit2):

April summary

I also ran two 5ks and 1 half marathon!

My goals for May:

  • Keep up the #runstreak as long as I can
  • Work on adding some speed work at least once a week
  • Track my calories more consistently
  • We have 3, maybe 4 5k races on the calendar.
  • Keep enjoying running!

Did everyone else have a good April? What are your plans for May?

Monday Motivation – DietBet

Baby weight be gone!! That’s my motto. I’ve been doing pretty well and trying to patiently work this baby weight off, but I also have not really held myself accountable much. I will make lots and lots of excuses and the Halloween candy has been the death of me.

So, as a little extra incentive I decided to join my friend Mindy’s (Road Runner Girl) dietbet! I’ve always heard about dietbet via the Twitters but never really looked into it much. My diet mantra has always been, run your ass off, count calories, hit the gym some too. It’s worked in the past, but right now I need a little extra boost. With the late nights, sleep deprivation and added stress of balancing a toddler I’m really reaching for the junk food right now.

Here’s how dietbet works: You find a game you want to join and pay the entry fee (usually $25) which goes into a big pot. You commit to losing either 4% of your body weight in 4 weeks or 10% in 6 months – all VERY attainable with a little work. You weigh in at the beginning and the end and those people in the game who reached their goal get to split the pot. Easy peasy! I like that there is money involved. It’s a little extra boost to keep that cookie out of my mouth. Plus I also like that it’s very social. You can leave posts to your games, pictures, updates, and also cheer each other on. It appeals to the social media nerd in me. This dietbet game JUST started so you can still join if you like. Just click on the link here:

I’m excited about it and I even talked Mr. Z into joining me. We’re doing it together which will make it a whole lot easier since we tend to support and push each other well.

Monday Motivation – Official CCC10k Blogger!

I am so stinking excited you guys! I have been selected as one of the official Crescent City Connection 10k bloggers this year! The CCC10k is a huge race here in New Orleans that always falls on Easter weekend. Thousands of people of all abilities come out for this race to run and walk it and celebrate at the huge after party.

This year’s race was actually my first time doing it. I usually had family commitments around Easter and couldn’t run it. We ran it as a family: a little one in the oven, another little one in the stroller, and a big one running beside me. We had such a blast! You can read about the 2014 race recap and watch the race video here.

This is such a huge honor to be included with a great group of bloggers and people I call running friends for this event. If you get a chance, go check out their blogs. They are phenomenal, inspiring people to know.

I chose this as my Monday Motivation because I want to be able to RUN this race in the spring. I had to mostly run/walk it last time because of uncomfortable hip and bladder issues due to my pregnancy. I want to be fit and back in full running mode by the time this race rolls around. I’m thinking of shooting for a 10k PR if my training goes well.

I was so motivated I got out the door this morning and ran a decent 2.75 miles. I actually ran, ran this time. I only had to take a couple of short walk breaks, and that was while pushing the single jogging stroller and being VERY sleep deprived (cranky, gassy baby last night). It’s a good start!

Monday Motivation – The Double Stroller BEAST

Awwwright. It is ON like Donkey Kong folks. I am now officially 4 weeks postpartum and this extra weight has got to come off. I put on a pair of jeans yesterday. Ooof. Can you say stuffing 10 lbs of crap in a 5 lb bag? I’m ready to get to work and drop these extra pounds.  Plus seeing everyone’s race pics and updates from Chicago this weekend has really given me the running itch! Congrats to all the Chicago runners!!!

My motivation this week is THIS BEAST! The BOB Ironman Duallie Stroller…whew!

I took it out for it’s first spin this week and man it is a WORK-OUT! I was just power walking with a few little run spurts here and there (when Little Z screams “I stepped on the gas peddle Momma! Go fast!”, I have to comply). I was drenched in sweat after just 2.2 miles.

dual bobI’m a little intimidated by it because of it’s sheer beast-ness but I’m also a bit excited about learning to run with it, control it and push it. I attribute running with Little Z in the single stroller these last couple of years to my increase in speed and big race PRs. So I know this double stroller is going to get me into some serious cardio shape. *puff, puff*

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right?? 🙂

Make it a great week!!

Monday Motivation – Inspire Yourself!

I saw this the other day and I really liked it. I like it because it reminds me of all the people that inspire me weekly. But it also reminds me of a very important lesson: I need to inspire myself. I’ve been in a slump lately. I’ve been having a lot of stomach issues (pregnancy related) and I’m having to relearn how to eat. It’s been frustrating and I just have not felt like doing anything related to exercising. That then leads to a self-defeating attitude that I’m not out there doing something. I’m eating smaller meals and starting to figure out what works and what doesn’t (THANK YOU Tums!). So this week I’m determined to get back out there and get moving. My goal this week is to inspire myself. I want to look back at this meme on Friday and say, “Yeah, I kicked some ass this week. I inspired ME!”

So get out there and be an inspiration to yourself! Make it a great week!

Monday Motivation – Be Awesome!

It’s another Monday! I saw this on Fit Girl. Happy Girl’s blog and really liked it.  Just short and sweet. Go out there and be awesome this week! Be awesome in whatever it is you’re pursuing be it running, getting in a good workout, eating healthy, playing with your kids or just living life to the fullest!

We had a great weekend. It was rainy, rainy all weekend and I wasn’t sure if we’d be able to get our 5k in for the #BeatCancer We Will Find a Cure virtual race. But Saturday morning, the clouds parted enough that we could get our run in. It was a muggy, nasty run but I was so glad to be a part of such a wonderful cause and effort.

They extended the virtual sign-up for people that still want to get in on the action. You can still sign up here: #BeatCancer Bottomless 5K Fun Run & Virtual Run  and you get this great medal for your running or walking effort!

Go out and make it a great week and BE AWESOME!

Monday Motivation – Stop and enjoy the show

I know we’ve all heard and read about unplugging for a run every once in a while. It’s so easy to get caught up in the technology and stats of our runs between our phones, GPS, Garmin watches, heart rate monitors, and digital music that we forget why we’re out there in the first place…to run and enjoy it! It’s nice on occasion to not only completely unplug from everything and run, but to actually stop and take in your surroundings while you’re out there. Admire that gorgeous sunset over the water. Marvel at that leaf blowing in the wind. Take in the beauty that surrounds us everyday that we so often take for granted.

I recently did this on a run. Ok, so I had my phone with me (for safety reasons) and took a bunch of pictures, but I stopped a LOT during the run (time and pace be damned!) and just enjoyed finding different flowers to appreciate. Springtime in Louisiana is a beautiful time. The wild flowers and spring colors are abundant everywhere. I had so much fun looking for flowers and taking pictures that I totally forgot I was, *gasp*, exercising!! That’s what unplugging and enjoying the show is all about.

Here are just a few of the wild flowers I spotted along the course.

Monday Motivation – GET OUT THE DOOR!

Get out the door

Last Monday I talked about doing something that scared you. I LOVED all the responses I received! You wonderfully inspiring, brave souls joined a group bike ride, put together a 70.3 ironman relay, and ran intervals for the first time!! I was sidelined a bit last week with a head cold and then Baby Z got sick. But for my something scary I decided to set up a Facebook page for my blog. It was fun! You can check it out here Take a gander and “like” it…well, ehm…if you like. 🙂

This week, for my Monday Motivation I posted this meme. I’ve always loved this one because it’s SO TRUE. Some (well, most) days I struggle just to get out the door to exercise. I am always full of tons of excuses, “I’m too tired”. “I’m too busy.” “My house is dirty.” “Ohh, a Friends episode just came on!” I often use a little trick to get myself out the door. I make a bargain with myself, “Just 10 minutes”. All I have to do is move for 10 minutes. I can run, jog, walk, dance, skip…whatever, just MOVE. If I’m not feeling it I can go back in and finish that episode of Friends (that I’ve seen a million times already). 99.99% of time, once I get going and those endorphins kick in I start feeling great and want to finish what I started. Ten minutes turn into 30. One mile turns into three. And I’m always glad I walked out that door.

So this week, I challenge you to GET OUT THE DOOR! Make a pact with yourself. Just ten minutes of movement. That’s it. Try it and let me know how it goes. Did you fell better? Did you keep going?

Make it a great week!

Monday Motivation

So I challenge you to get out there this week and do something that scares you!

I’m fighting a bit of a head cold right now, so today I’m just going to do a slow and easy three miler followed by some hip and glute strengthening exercises with my resistance band.

For my something that scares me, I think I’m going to try a new class at the gym, or I’ve been thinking about going to a StrollFit class put on by our local Baby Boot Camp. I’ll let you guys know how it goes!

Let me hear about your week’s fitness plans and your plans to do something new and scary!

Make it a monumental week!
